On this page you will find the questions worth asking before choosing a wooden pool or a spa in a tropical climate, and how to look after spa water once it is in place.
Available on request, not online
A wooden pool or a spa depends on your plot, your access, your budget and how you plan to use it. That is why we do not list them in the online shop. Send us a message with a few details and we will tell you what we can offer:
- where the pool or spa would go (garden, terrace, roof, villa for rent or private home);
- the approximate size you have in mind and how many people will use it;
- the access for delivery to the site;
- whether you already have an electrical supply and a water point nearby.
We will tell you what is possible, including installation, which we discuss case by case: ask us.
Wooden pools in a tropical climate
Above-ground and semi-buried wooden pools are popular for their natural look and because they need less excavation than a concrete pool. On our island, a few points deserve attention before you decide.
Humidity and sun
Constant humidity, salt air near the coast and strong UV are hard on wood. Ask about the wood species, how it has been treated and how often the outer cladding should be oiled or protected. Good ventilation around the structure helps it last.
Termites
Termites are a real issue in the Caribbean. Check that the wood is treated against insects and keep the base of the structure clear and dry, without direct contact with damp soil or vegetation.
Wind and the hurricane season
The hurricane season runs from June to November. A wooden pool must sit on a stable, level base and be designed for our wind conditions. See our guide to preparing a pool for a hurricane.
Water treatment
The water in a wooden pool is treated like any other pool: stabilised chlorine, pH control and algae prevention, with water at 27 to 30 °C all year. You will find everything in our water treatment range.
Spas and hot tubs: looking after the water
A spa holds a small volume of water heated to around 37 to 40 °C, with several people bathing in it. Bacteria develop faster than in a pool, so spa water needs regular attention even when the cover stays on.
- Test the water often with test strips and keep the pH balanced.
- Use a disinfectant suited to spas. The Bayrol SpaTime range in our catalogue is designed for spa water.
- Clean the filter cartridge regularly and rinse it after heavy use.
- Change the water periodically, following the manufacturer's advice for your spa. Water is expensive on the French side (around €9.50 per m³ according to the AFD), so good daily care helps you change it less often.
- Keep the cover closed when the spa is not in use: it limits evaporation, dust and leaves.
Spa products and cleaning accessories are available online and in our Baie Nettlé store, where we can advise you on the right product for your spa.
